Preparing for Your Sleep Study

Test Day Tips

  • Avoid anything caffeinated after 12:00 p.m. on the day of your test (coffee, tea, pop, energy drinks, chocolate, etc.)
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages the day of your test
  • Do not take any naps prior to your sleep study
  • Try to maintain your normal daytime routine and avoid any unusual physical activity
  • Avoid heavy make-up, hairspray, hair oils or products such as conditioners, Vaseline, styling gels, etc. as these can interfere with the recording
  • Wake up early on the day of your study to help make sure you are ready to fall asleep when the test begins

What to Bring

  • You may bring your own pillow (some people sleep better with a familiar pillow)
  • Your daily medications and any over the counter medications you may need, i.e. antacids. Make sure to bring enough to take them on your usual schedule

  • A change of clothes for the next morning
  • Money for the vending area or newspapers
  • Toiletries or personal hygiene items, i.e. soap, shampoo, deodorant and toothbrush.
  • Please leave all jewelry and watches at home
  • Photo ID and insurance card(s)
  • A book or something to help you relax before falling asleep

You will receive a confirmation call from a sleep technologist on the day of your sleep study.
